Jonathan West grew up in and around Dunedin. His book The Face of Nature: An Environmental History of the Otago Peninsula won the W. H. Oliver Prize for best book of New Zealand history, and was shortlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.

He is currently writing a history of lakes in New Zealand.
