Jessica Thompson Carr
Jessica is an artist, a writer, an aunty, and an activist born in Ōtepoti, Aotearoa. She is takatāpui and an Aquarius.
She has a degree in English literature and art history and her Master’s coursework is on Māori ekphrastic poetry from the University of Otago. She shares and sells her art on Instagram and Shopify under the name Māori Mermaid (@maori_mermaid). She is currently travelling Aotearoa in her tiny van with her partner. They are making art, learning te Reo, taking on whatever jobs they can, and visiting their papakāinga.
Her poetry and illustrations focus mainly on what it means to be Pākehā and Māori in modern Aotearoa, navigating her sexuality and identity as takatāpui, and Indigenous rights. She is chipping away at decolonisation, working every day and every night to become her tīpuna’s wildest dreams and to give as much of herself as she can to them, her whānau, and her Māori community.
