Graeme Downes

I completed my PhD on the music of Mahler and nineteenth-century symphonic antecedents in 1993. I regularly contribute pre-concert lectures for the NZSO and Southern Sinfonia on the music of Mahler and Shostakovich. My musicological background in terms of academia informs both my research into songwriting techniques and my work as a composer. I have a 30-year career as a songwriter and performer in the rock band the Verlaines and as a solo performer. I teach mainly song writing and musicology. I am also a freelance musicologist in the area of copyright disputes.
