Becky Manawatu (Ngāi Tahu)
Becky Manawatu (Ngāi Tahu) was born in Nelson and raised in Waimangaroa, and she lived in Germany and Italy before returning to the West Coast with her family.
Auē is her first novel. Launched in 2019, it won the 2020 Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize and the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel, and has been in the bestseller lists ever since. It has sold 15,000 copies to date, and is being translated into French, Bulgarian and Turkish. Bookseller Kiran Dass says: "I think everybody should read Auē. It's a book that people will still be talking about in decades to come." Becky is the 2021 University of Otago Burns Fellow in Dunedin, and is working on her next book.
